I began studying U.S. History during our country's Bicentennial in 1976. Since then I have earned a B.A. in American Studies from the George Washington University and an M.A. in Military History from Duke University. I have taught U.S. History, New Jersey History, Western Civilization, and World
History at both the secondary and higher education levels.
Engaging students at these schools and varied levels of education has allowed me to understand what students have been taught, and what they have not been taught, about history, our country, and its place in the world. This understanding provides me the opportunity to more effectively address important historical issues, events, and concepts which they have not been exposed to, and to increase their awareness of the rich and valuable history and values of the United States. Additionally, much of our country's character and deeply rooted heritage comes from early western civilizations. World history is also imperative to study and know in order to respect where we came from and where we may be going in the future. Thus my U. S. History classes incorporate world history concepts and issues as well.
Overall I strive to incorporate all five of the disciplinary standards of the social studies curriculum: civics and government, geography, economics, history, and psychology to ensure my students are provided with information, critical thinking skills, experiences, and a well rounded background to grow into responsible and effective citizens.
